Doug Mooney

Computer Vision CoE Lead

Doug Mooney, PhD, is a Principal Data Scientist and leads the Computer Vision Center of Excellence at Illumination Works. Doug has 20+ years of experience in the intersection of advanced statistical modeling and computer science, machine learning, algorithm development, statistical and mathematical modeling and computing, computer vision, and image analysis. Doug’s career interests include image analysis, machine learning, and statistical modeling, extracting information from both traditional data and non-structured data such as text and images. He brings experience leading projects in healthcare, energy, environment, finance, security, and defense for both commercial and government clients.

Doug has a great passion for computer vision. He has advanced ILW’s innovative capabilities in image and video analysis for object tracking and experimentation with multimodal vision-language models. Doug has played an instrumental role in the growth of ILW’s data science and computer vision work, serving as a key technical author on numerous winning proposals, ensuring cutting-edge technologies are incorporated into ILW’s solutions. Doug consistently demonstrates his commitment to excellence by diving into modern technologies to bring forward novel approaches for making technical solutions more scalable for our clients.

Doug was awarded ILW’s Innovation Award in 2024 for his contributions to our Linnea part printability recommendation system for the Army where his innovative approach brought fresh perspectives and new ideas, transforming our work in computer vision-based feature extraction from technical drawings and machine learning classification. He was also awarded the 2022 Innovation Award for his work on ILW’s AI/ML object tracking model for the Army, an AI/ML-driven approach to extract/analyze 2D engineering drawings for additive manufacturing (Linnea) for the Army, and the automatic Bayesian network discovery for automated data cleansing (ADCAT) for the Navy.

Doug was formerly a research leader in advanced analytics at a leading science and technology company and before that he was an associate professor of mathematics. Doug also co-authored a top selling textbook on mathematical modeling for the Mathematical Association of America. Doug enjoys traveling and going to concerts and theater with his wife and hanging out with their cat Philomena.
