Beavercreek, OH; August 2019 – Illumination Works (ILW) announces that it has been awarded an AFWERX Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) project to perform a three-month feasibility study for an automated maintenance data capture and prediction tool to enable real-time data capture during maintenance execution; providing maintainers an easier, seamless way to enter data and improve data accuracy using a tablet or mobile device.
“Illumination Works is proud to partner with the Air Force on this important task. The Air Force community has a need for real-time, modern data capture to provide the young workforce with the tools of their generation,” said Jon Mitchell, ILW CEO.
With initial letters of interest from AFLCMC/WW, AFLCMC/LG-LZ, and AFLCMC/HI, ILW was invited to participate in the AFWERX Spark Collider on August 14-15 in Austin, TX, where additional Air Force organizations acknowledged value in this technical capability and showed interest, including the Air National Guard (ANG).
“The ability to enter information into the MDS using voice input, coupled with machine learning to ensure the data entered is usable, will be a game changer for the USAF,” stated an Air Force Spark Tank lead from ANG.
ILW’s automated maintenance data capture and prediction engine is a product of the ILW Innovation Lab, which was originally prototyped based on machine learning work performed for the Air Force. This tool successfully enabled more efficient and accurate capture and structure of maintenance records by leveraging native mobile technologies to collect maintenance actions, observations, and notes, and simplified and automated the data collection processes. This tool is now ready to be leveraged by the Air Force Logistics Community as well as expanded to other data collection uses and domains.
This is ILW’s second SBIR win this year. Earlier this summer, ILW was awarded a nine-month, Phase I SBIR to establish a reliable, repeatable, and accurate correlation between maintenance data and its associated supply information. This study is assessing the feasibility of creating a crosswalk with existing or new data and determining the level of accuracy that can be achieved.
