Illumination Works (ILW) is thrilled to announce the launch of its Computer Vision Center of Excellence (CoE). Computer Vision (CV) is a specialized area within Data Science that focuses on image processing and applying artificial intelligence (AI) models for tasks such as object detection, recognition, and tracking. These capabilities enable computers to interpret visual data and extract valuable insights, empowering businesses to make more informed decisions.
Committment to Excellence
Advancing Team Expertise
The creation of the Computer Vision CoE reflects ILW’s ongoing dedication to excellence, both for our team and our clients. This new CoE will seamlessly collaborate with our established Data Science Practice and Natural Language Processing (NLP) CoE to enhance expertise and deliver leading-edge, integrated computer vision solutions.
Dedicated to Empowering Individuals
Cultivating Thought Leadership
The launch of the CV CoE aligns with ILW’s top strategic priority to support our people and nurture the next generation of leaders. This new CoE enhances collaboration across project teams, promotes continuous learning among data scientists, and drives the development of best practices, research, education, and thought leadership in computer vision. These efforts embrace the foundational focus of delivering exceptional value to our clients.
This is an exciting initiative for ILW and the Data Science Practice. We have grown our computer vision capabilities so much over the last few years that it makes sense for ILW to embrace its standing as industry leaders. Within this CoE, we hope to not only set a standard for how excellent computer vision is done, but also draw in talent from around the company to incubate innovation in ways we otherwise would not have had the opportunity or knowledge of if it were not for this community.
ILW has exceptional data scientists with deep expertise in computer vision to help our customers unlock knowledge from images and videos. The launch of our CV CoE will further enable our data scientists to stay on top of emerging technologies in computer vision and develop innovations that advance the field and support our customers.

Meet Our Practice Lead
John Tribble, Principal Data Scientist
John Tribble will head the Computer Vision CoE. John brings 18 years of experience in analytical roles in both the government and commercial spaces. In 2022, John was awarded the ILW Innovation Award for his work on ILW’s Army AI/ML Object Tracking project, utilizing innovative deep learning CV to accurately tracking objects from the point of x-ray detection of energetic remains to physical removal by a robotic arm.
John has deep expertise in geospatial information systems and geographic data science and has performed analysis on problems ranging from patterns of life analysis for equipment and military movements to applying algorithms to data streams to assess risk in real time. His prior work includes applications of exploratory analysis and machine learning models, crafting technical reports and visualizations, and data management.
